Renewing Your Certiphyto in 2026: Strategic Advice Is No Longer Required
For a few years, renewing a farm decision-maker’s Certiphyto meant a detour: producing a strategic phytosanitary advice report drawn up by an independent body. That step has gone. Since 1 January 2026, renewal has returned to its original logic — refresh your knowledge, then apply. Here is what changed and how to proceed.
What was removed
The French law of 11 August 2025 aimed at lifting constraints on the farming profession opened a broad revision of the pesticide framework. Its implementing texts, published at the end of December 2025 and in force from 1 January 2026, removed three obligations.
Strategic phytosanitary advice is no longer mandatory. Introduced by the EGalim law, this scheme required professional users to periodically obtain independent strategic advice on their crop-protection strategy. It is replaced by an optional global strategic advice service: it is now for the farmer to judge whether an outside view is needed.
It is no longer required for renewing the farm decision-maker Certiphyto. That follows directly from the previous point. Renewal becomes a self-contained procedure again.
The separation between sales and advice has been lifted for distributors: a single operator — cooperative, merchant — may again both sell products and provide advice, provided the services are clearly distinguished on invoices. The separation requirement does remain for product manufacturers.
One useful clarification: these measures remove neither the Certiphyto, nor the obligation to hold one, nor its five-year validity. They remove a condition that had been added to renewal.
What has not changed
The certificate remains valid for five years, remains individual, and its renewal still requires demonstrating a refresher.
Two routes are open:
- A renewal session, delivered by a training provider authorised by the agriculture ministry. It generally fits into one day.
- A standalone test, for those who prefer to sit the knowledge check directly.
In both cases the provider issues an attendance certificate or a score sheet, which serves as evidence for the application.
The application itself is unchanged: it is filed online on service-public.fr, the authority has two months to decide, and the renewed certificate is downloaded from the personal account. The full route is detailed in our guide to obtaining the Certiphyto.
The timeline to respect
The real risk in renewal is no longer regulatory, it is calendar-based. Three durations add up: finding a session, attending it, waiting for processing.
| Deadline | What should be done by then |
|---|---|
| D-6 months | Identify the expiry date and book a session |
| D-3 months | Have attended the session or sat the test |
| D-2 months | Have filed the online application with evidence |
| D | Hold the new downloaded certificate |
Letting a certificate lapse is not a minor incident: it can mean going through the initial route again, which is longer and more expensive. And during any period without a valid certificate, buying professional-use products becomes impossible — a distributor cannot sell to someone who cannot show a valid certificate.
The reflex that settles the matter for good: the day you download your certificate, diarise its expiry date minus six months.
Should you give up on advice altogether?
Strategic advice becomes optional; it does not become useless. The question deserves a cool-headed answer, because it bears on both technical performance and occupational exposure.
The history of France’s Ecophyto plan invites some clear-sightedness about what purely regulatory instruments produce. In a 2017 analysis published in Cahiers Agricultures, Guichard and co-authors dissect the plan’s failure to reduce pesticide use despite an accumulation of tools, pointing in particular to the gap between the instruments mobilised and the agronomic levers actually available at farm level (see the study). What this literature suggests is that neither the obligation nor its removal determines practices on its own: what weighs is support genuinely adapted to the cropping system.
Translated into a concrete decision: if the strategic advice you used to receive gave you useful trade-offs — variety choice, intervention thresholds, alternatives — its disappearance from the list of obligations is no reason to drop it. If it amounted to a document produced to tick a box, you have just recovered time and budget.
Employees and contractors
The removal of strategic advice concerns renewal of the farm decision-maker certificate. Other categories follow their own renewal rules, without this point ever having been a condition for them.
For employers, two checks are needed each year:
- the validity of each concerned employee’s certificate, including recurring seasonal workers;
- the category held, which must match the tasks actually assigned — an employee who takes over treatment decisions no longer falls under the “operator” category alone. Our article on choosing the right category sets out those boundaries.
Remember that the certificate is individual and follows its holder: a departing employee takes theirs with them, and a new arrival must be checked on hiring.
Take action
Find today the expiry date on your downloaded certificate and count back six months: that is when to book your renewal session with an authorised provider. Stop looking for strategic phytosanitary advice for this renewal — it is no longer required. For the full breakdown of categories, routes and applicable texts, see the complete Certiphyto profile.
Frequently asked questions
+Is strategic phytosanitary advice still needed to renew a Certiphyto?
No. Following the French law of 11 August 2025 and its implementing texts in force from 1 January 2026, strategic phytosanitary advice is no longer mandatory and is no longer required to renew the farm decision-maker certificate. Renewal goes through a dedicated session or a test, then the online application.
+What happens if my Certiphyto has expired?
Renewal must be requested before the five-year deadline. Letting the certificate lapse can mean going through the initial route again, which is longer and more expensive than a renewal session. If you are unsure about your situation, the DRAAF (regional agriculture directorate) in your region is the authoritative contact.
+How far ahead should renewal be planned?
A practical rule is six months before expiry. You have to add up the search for an available session with an authorised provider, the session itself, and the processing of the online application, for which the authority has two months.
