How much does MASE certification cost? Budget item by item

“How much does MASE cost?” is usually the first question — and the only honest answer refuses to be a single number. The scheme publishes no national price list: costs are split between your local association, the audit firm and, above all, your own organisation. Here is how to build a realistic budget, item by item, without buying invented figures.

Why there is no “MASE price tag”

MASE is an association-run scheme: the common MASE/France Chimie system is carried by local associations bringing together client companies and contractors. So there is no certifier with a rate card, but three distinct streams of expenditure:

1. the annual membership fee paid to your local association;
2. the certification audit, billed by an independent approved firm;
3. the internal investment to build and run the management system — by far the largest, and the one budgets most often forget.

Let us take them in turn.

The local association membership fee

Joining is the mandatory entry point: it opens the « engaged company » status, access to the network’s procedures and, in due course, the session before the comité de pilotage (steering committee). Each local association — Atlantique, Est, Hauts-de-France, Île-de-France Normandie Centre, Méditerranée, Rhône-Alpes, Sud-Ouest, plus the overseas and international chapters — sets its own annual fee. The right reflex: contact the association you depend on geographically and ask for its schedule.

Bear in mind the fee is recurring: it runs every year, including during the preparation phase (9 to 18 months between joining and the audit) and throughout the life of the certification.

The certification audit: what moves the invoice

The audit is performed by a third-party firm chosen from the list approved by the Comité Stratégique National (national strategic committee). You can — and should — consult one or two firms to compare proposals. Audit duration, hence cost, depends mainly on:

• the size of the company (headcount in scope);
• the scope to certify: number of locations, activities covered;
• the nature of the fieldwork: the audit includes a document review and one or more audits of jobs, works or services in progress, with the workers.

Two rules of the scheme have a direct budget impact:

• Consulting/audit incompatibility: a firm cannot audit you less than two years after supporting you (consulting, mock audit…). If you plan on external support, separate the two budgets and the two providers from day one.
• The certification duration you obtain changes the cost over the cycle: a three-year certification spreads the audit cost over three financial years; a one-year certification sends you back to the audit — and its invoice — the following year. Internal investment: the real centre of gravity

The item quotes never show is almost always the heaviest: the time and resources spent making the system live across the five pillars of the 2024 manual.

These costs are not a certification tax: they are what produces the return. A study by Fernández-Muñiz, Montes-Peón and Vázquez-Ordás published in 2009 in Safety Science found a positive relationship between the occupational safety management system and overall firm performance — safety, but also competitiveness and economic results (see the study). In the same vein, a study by Vinodkumar and Bhasi published in 2011 in the same journal compared certified and non-certified companies and observed better safety management practices among the former (see the study).

On accident rates, the MASE network claims that companies applying its approach have two to three times fewer accidents than the national average — a gap that reads directly in your accident costs, your employer insurance contributions and your ability to bid.

And the commercial return?

The calculation is incomplete without the revenue column. For a contractor, MASE certification conditions access to many industrial tenders: chemicals, petrochemicals, energy, steel. It is a market-entry cost, not a comfort expense — the relevant figure is the revenue made accessible (or lost). How to get reliable figures within a week

1. Call your local association: membership fee schedule, engagement meeting calendar, list of approved audit firms.
2. Request two audit proposals, stating headcount, locations and activities of the scope to certify — the same information you will give the administrator.
3. Price the internal work: monthly steering time, trainings and inductions to organise, tooling for the twice-yearly reporting. That is your real budget line.
4. Spread over 24 months: fees, preparation, audit, then the life of the system — and aim for the three-year certification to amortise the whole.
