How to obtain MASE certification in 2026: steps and timelines

MASE certification has become the entry pass for companies working on French industrial sites: maintenance, piping, scaffolding, industrial cleaning, electrical work… Without it, many tenders in chemicals, petrochemicals and energy remain out of reach. The good news: the path is mapped from end to end by the MASE association network. Here are the steps, the timelines and the traps to avoid in 2026.

An association-run scheme, not a commercial certificate

Before the steps, one framing point: MASE (Manuel d’Amélioration Sécurité Santé Environnement des Entreprises — the companies’ safety, health and environment improvement manual) is not issued by a conventional certification body. It is a common MASE/France Chimie system, run by a network of local associations covering France — with international chapters — where client companies (« entreprises utilisatrices ») and contractors (« entreprises intervenantes ») sit together. The certification decision belongs to the comité de pilotage (steering committee) of your local association, a body appointed by its board.

That governance changes everything: your file will be judged by industrial companies that know your trades and your worksites. The current standard is the 2024 version of the manual, organised into five pillars — management commitment, skills and qualifications, work organisation, system effectiveness, review and continuous improvement — which we detail in our article on the 2024 MASE manual and its 5 pillars.

Step 1 — Join the local MASE association

Everything starts with joining the MASE association your company depends on geographically. You pay an annual membership fee set by the association, and an engagement meeting introduces the network and the manual. At this point your company appears among the « engaged » companies — a status visible to client companies, distinct from certification.

Membership brings immediate obligations, the most structuring being the twice-yearly reporting: every six months you send your safety, health and environment indicators — accident frequency rate, severity rate, reported hazardous situations, toolbox talks, audits — along with significant changes in your organisation. That data will be on the table the day the steering committee reviews your certification: neglecting it means facing a jury that already has reasons to doubt you.

Step 2 — Build the management system and make it live

This is the decisive phase, and the one you cannot compress. The manual expects a system lived through a full cycle: an SHE policy carried and explained by management, objectives and indicators tracked, safety inductions and skills paths for every position, systematic job preparation, field reports acted upon, accident and near-miss analyses, internal audits and an annual review that leads to decisions.

This is not a paperwork exercise. Research confirms it: the systematic review by Robson and co-authors published in 2007 in Safety Science on occupational health and safety management systems found favourable safety effects while stressing that implementation quality drives the results (see the study). The MASE auditor will examine exactly that: how your arrangements have lived since you joined, not how handsome the binder looks.

Step 3 — Request the audit, 9 to 18 months after joining

The window is set by the scheme: the audit request goes in between 9 and 18 months after joining, through your association. You specify the scope to certify, the field of application (locations, activities) and the preferred period, then choose one or two audit firms from the list approved by the Comité Stratégique National (CSN). The association’s administrator arranges the introduction.

Two safeguards are worth knowing from the start:

  • Auditors are trained and accredited by MASE France et International after qualifying exams.
  • A firm cannot carry out your certification audit less than two years after a consulting assignment with you (support, mock audit…). Choose any advisers accordingly.

Step 4 — Go through the certification audit

The audit combines a document review and one or more field audits — offices, workshops and jobs in progress, with the workers themselves. It runs in three stages: an opening meeting (mission, audit plan, selection of the jobs to audit), the findings, then a closing meeting where the auditor shares strengths, areas of progress and gaps, formalised as minor or major deviation sheets you may comment on or contest.

Scoring rests on a 267-question audit questionnaire, using binary or variable scoring. For atypical structures — single-person companies, no subcontracting, below regulatory thresholds — up to 38 questions can be neutralised by justified decision of the auditor, but never a whole chapter.

Step 5 — The presentation and the steering committee’s decision

The auditor then presents the results to your association’s steering committee: scores, summary, deviation sheets, indicators, system maturity. The chair systematically asks for the auditor’s opinion before the members vote. The committee deliberates under strict recusal rules — members withdraw when the file concerns their own company, its subsidiaries or a direct competitor — then decides.

Three possible outcomes:

Decision What it means
3-year certification System judged mature and alive — the target
1-year certification Real but improvable system: the committee wants to see you again soon. No more than twice in a row: at the third request, it is 3 years or nothing
Refusal The company remains « engaged » and has 12 months at most, with a 6-month waiting period, before a new initial audit including closure of the previous gaps

The certificate is issued by the local association, and the list of certified companies can be consulted by members on the network’s website — that is where your clients will check your status.

How long, and how much?

On timelines, the mechanics speak for themselves: joining, 9 to 18 months of system operation, the audit, then the next steering committee session. A company starting from scratch should think in terms of 12 to 24 months. On budget — membership fee, audit, internal investment — the amounts depend on your association, your size and your scope: our article on the cost of MASE certification breaks down the cost items and how to get reliable figures.

One last piece of method: build the system to last, not for the exam. Certification is renewed through a full audit, with reinforced scoring that expects progress — and the twice-yearly reporting never stops. If you are still weighing MASE against an international standard, our comparison ISO 45001 or MASE will help you decide based on your client base.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

+How long does it take to obtain MASE certification?

The scheme requires the audit to be requested between 9 and 18 months after joining the local association, giving the management system time to run. Counting membership, preparation, the audit and the presentation to the comité de pilotage (steering committee), a company starting from scratch should plan on 12 to 24 months.

+Who awards MASE certification?

Not the audit firm. The auditor presents the results to the steering committee of the local MASE association, which deliberates and votes. Certification is granted for one or three years depending on the maturity of the system, and the certificate is issued by the local association.

+Can you freely choose your MASE auditor?

The company selects one or two firms from the list of audit firms approved by the Comité Stratégique National (national strategic committee), and the association's administrator makes the introduction. A firm cannot audit you less than two years after providing you with consulting services (mock audits included): consulting and certification are incompatible.
