Becoming a PRAP Trainer in France: Pathway, Prerequisites and Certification (IBC or 2S)

The PRAP trainer is the keystone of any offer built on physical-activity risk prevention training in France: without one, no organisational authorisation, no sessions, no certificates. Whether you are an independent trainer moving upmarket, an employee of a training organisation or a manager who wants to bring this competency in-house, here is the complete pathway in 2026.

What a PRAP trainer actually does

PRAP action-training is not about showing people “how to lift properly”. The PRAP trainer teaches employees to observe and analyse their own work situation — movements, postures, effort, workstation layout — and then to propose improvements to their employer. They facilitate a participatory prevention approach embedded in the company’s project, working with its prevention stakeholders.

That pedagogical bar is not decorative. A systematic review by Clemes, Haslam and Haslam published in 2010 in Occupational Medicine (see the study) found that conventional manual-handling training focused on technique shows little demonstrated effect on injuries. The PRAP scheme was designed precisely to move past that finding, by working on real work situations — and that is what the trainer must know how to facilitate.

Step 1: the prerequisites

Before entering trainer training, you must have completed the INRS online self-training module « Acquérir des bases en prévention des risques professionnels » (acquiring the basics of occupational-risk prevention) — or the equivalent course, « Obtenir des compétences de base en prévention », run by the prevention services of the regional funds (Carsat, Cramif, CGSS).

It is a foundation: risk assessment, prevention stakeholders, general principles. Do not treat it as a formality — the concepts come back throughout the pathway.

Step 2: the trainer course, by stream

The PRAP scheme has two streams, and the trainer certificate is specific to each:

PRAP IBC trainer PRAP 2S trainer
Sectors covered Industry, construction, retail, office activities Health and social care
Minimum duration 70 hours in person 98 hours in person
Organisation Non-consecutive weeks, fieldwork in a company Non-consecutive weeks, fieldwork in a care facility
Certificate validity 36 months 36 months
Trainer refresher (MAC) 21 hours / 36 months 28 hours / 36 months

The course is taken with the INRS or an entity authorised at “trainer training” level. The between-session fieldwork — running an analysis exercise in a real company or facility — is an integral part of the pathway: line up a host organisation before you enrol.

The 2S stream incorporates assisted-mobility support (ALM, accompagner la mobilité): the 2S trainer learns to train carers to mobilise the people they assist “while taking care of the other and of oneself”. If you hesitate between the two streams, our comparison PRAP IBC or PRAP 2S helps you decide based on your market.

Step 3: certification and upkeep

At the end of the pathway, the PRAP trainer certificate is issued by the Assurance Maladie – Risques professionnels / INRS network. It is valid nationally for 36 months.

To keep it: a trainer refresher every 36 months (at least 21 hours for IBC, 28 hours for 2S), with certifying assessments. An expired certificate means the organisation employing you can no longer run valid PRAP sessions — put the deadline under control from day one.

Career outlets: where does a PRAP trainer work?

  • In an authorised training organisation: the certified trainer is what makes the organisation’s authorisation possible — condition number one of the file, as our guide to obtaining the PRAP authorisation details. A certified, available trainer is therefore a sought-after profile.
  • In an authorised company or facility: many organisations train their own employees in-house with their own PRAP trainers, under the same authorisation scheme and the same FORPREV tool.
  • As an independent: contracting with authorised organisations that need delivery capacity — provided the contract makes clear who declares the sessions and issues the certificates.

In every case, the activity runs through FORPREV: sessions declared and closed, worker certificates issued in the tool, full traceability.

PRAP trainer or SST trainer: is stacking worth it?

The two schemes belong to the same ecosystem (INRS reference documents, national authorisation, FORPREV), but the certificates and authorisations are separate: being an SST trainer grants nothing on PRAP, and vice versa. Stacking them is, however, a genuine commercial lever: the same corporate clients often buy both, and an organisation covering workplace first aid and musculoskeletal-risk prevention offers a complete health-and-safety line. The SST side is described in our SST authorisation page.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Enrolling without validated prerequisites: the “basics of prevention” module is required at entry.
  • Choosing the wrong stream: a nursing-home contract calls for a 2S trainer, not IBC. Check your market before investing 70 or 98 hours.
  • Neglecting the fieldwork: without a real host organisation, the pathway cannot be validated in good conditions.
  • Letting the refresher slip: 36 months pass quickly; an expired certificate weakens your organisation’s authorisation.

Take action

The PRAP trainer pathway is an investment — prerequisites, 70 to 98 hours of training, fieldwork — but it opens a durable market, driven by the weight of musculoskeletal disorders in occupational disease. To place this pathway within your organisation’s overall authorisation project, see our PRAP authorisation page: conditions, FORPREV steps and the complete guide to download.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

+What are the prerequisites to enter PRAP trainer training?

You must have completed the INRS online self-training module « Acquérir des bases en prévention des risques professionnels » (basics of occupational-risk prevention) or the equivalent course run by the regional funds' prevention services. The trainer course itself is then taken with the INRS or an entity authorised at trainer-training level.

+How long is the PRAP trainer course?

At least 70 hours of in-person training for the IBC stream (industry, construction, retail and office activities) and at least 98 hours for the 2S stream (health and social care). The weeks are non-consecutive, with fieldwork to carry out in a company or facility of the relevant sector between sessions.

+Is the PRAP trainer certificate permanent?

No. It is valid nationally for 36 months. To keep it, the trainer takes a refresher (MAC, maintien-actualisation des compétences) every 36 months — at least 21 hours for the IBC stream, 28 hours for 2S — which includes certifying assessments.
