Obtaining a CQP through VAE: conditions, steps and the branch's role
Recognition of prior learning is not reserved for state diplomas: an experienced professional can also aim for a CQP (certificat de qualification professionnelle, the French industry-branch qualification certificate) without going back through a full course. For organisations working with a branch, supporting these candidates is a service line in its own right — and for the sector’s employees, often a faster route to the certificate. You still need to know which CQPs qualify, how the process unfolds and who decides in the end.
Which CQPs are accessible through VAE
The rule is simple to state: the individual right to VAE, created by the French social modernisation law of 17 January 2002, applies to certifications registered in the RNCP (the national register of professional certifications). In practice:
- RNCP-registered CQP: VAE applies as of right. The candidate can aim for the whole certificate or, if it is structured in skills blocks, partial validation.
- Unregistered CQP: the legal right to VAE does not apply. Some branches nonetheless organise their own experience-recognition arrangements — ask the CPNE (the branch’s national joint employment commission) or its operator, and assume nothing.
First reflex, then: check the certificate’s record on the France compétences website, its status and its registration expiry date.
The steps of the process
VAE for a CQP follows the scheme’s general mechanics, with one particularity: the certifier is the industry branch (or its appointed operator), not a ministry.
- Identify the certificate and the certifier. The CQP’s RNCP record names the certifying body: it drives the procedure. The public France VAE portal, born of the reform carried by the law of 21 December 2022, is being rolled out progressively: check whether the target certificate is listed; if not, the process runs directly through the certifier.
- File the eligibility application. The candidate describes their experience against the certificate’s framework. Eligibility conditions were relaxed by the recent reform; the precise rules for each certificate are stated by the certifier.
- Build the validation dossier. The heart of the process: describing and analysing real work activities to demonstrate, competency by competency, mastery of the framework.
- Meet the jury. Formed under the branch’s rules — generally joint —, it reviews the dossier, interviews the candidate and may use a practical assessment if the framework provides for one.
- Receive the decision: full validation, partial validation (acquired blocks are kept), or refusal. After partial validation, a complementary pathway — training or targeted experience — leads to the missing blocks.
What research shows: support makes the difference
Céreq’s research on access to VAE and validation pathways draws a consistent picture: the scheme attracts a broad audience unequally equipped for its complexity, and a significant share of candidates drop out along the way — for lack of time, of visibility on the frameworks, or of support, particularly from the employer. The same body of work stresses that employer support, both financial and in working-time arrangements, substantially raises the odds of completing a full validation.
For a CQP, this finding translates directly: the typical candidate is an employee working in the branch, and their company has a stake in the outcome. A supporting organisation that involves the employer from day one — realistic calendar, time set aside for the dossier, links to the occupational framework — puts the odds firmly on the candidate’s side.
The training organisation’s role: support, not certify
Your organisation does not award the certificate and does not replace the branch on the jury. Several legitimate services are open to you, though:
- Positioning support: checking that the candidate’s experience genuinely matches the target CQP’s framework before committing to the process;
- Dossier-writing support and preparation for the jury interview — a craft in itself, which we detail in our article on the VAE support professional and their pathway;
- Complementary training after partial validation, on the missing blocks — where your branch authorisation comes back into its own.
On the funding side, VAE has its own channels: the CPF (personal training account) can notably fund support for an eligible certification. The general funding rules for CQPs — CPF, OPCO, work-study contracts — are covered in our article on funding a CQP.
Pitfalls to avoid
- Promising VAE on an unregistered CQP: without RNCP registration, the legal right does not apply; always check before engaging a candidate.
- Underestimating the dossier: describing experience is not enough, it must be analysed against the framework — this is where most unsupported candidates give up.
- Ignoring the jury calendar: the branch sets its sessions; a dossier ready at the wrong time can wait months.
- Sidelining the employer: for a branch employee, employer support is a decisive success factor — involve them.
- Confusing support with ghost-writing: the jury assesses the candidate’s experience, expressed by the candidate; an over-polished dossier shows at the interview and works against them.
- Having no plan after partial validation: without a clear route to the missing blocks (complementary training, targeted experience, a new jury date), momentum fades and the candidate drops out — precisely the scenario research documents most.
Take action
VAE is a natural lever for an organisation rooted in a branch: it values the experience of the sector’s employees and complements your training pathways. Start by checking the target CQP’s registration status, then build a support offer worthy of the name. Frequently asked questions
+Are all CQPs accessible through VAE?
No. The individual right to VAE (validation des acquis de l'expérience, recognition of prior learning) applies to certifications registered in the RNCP. A registered CQP is therefore accessible; for an unregistered CQP, everything depends on any internal recognition arrangements the branch may have set up.
+Who assesses a VAE candidate for a CQP?
The certificate's jury, formed under the branch's rules — generally a joint panel with employer and employee representatives from the sector. It can grant full validation, partial validation (by skills blocks) or refuse.
+What is a training organisation's role in a VAE for a CQP?
It is not the certifier, but it can support the candidate: helping choose the right certificate, assisting with the experience dossier, preparing for the jury interview, and providing complementary training when validation is partial.
