Renewing the PRAP Authorisation: Refreshers, Deadlines and Pitfalls
Obtaining the PRAP authorisation is a project; keeping it is a system. Three clocks run permanently: the certificates of the workers you train (24 months), those of your trainers (36 months) and the authorisation itself (5 years). Miss one of the three and it is your right to train — or the promise made to your clients — that collapses. Here is how to manage the deadlines without stress.
Clock 1: worker certificates — 24 months
The national acteur PRAP (PRAP worker) certificate is valid for 24 months. To keep it, the employee takes a refresher — the MAC, for maintien-actualisation des compétences:
- 7 hours in the IBC stream (industry, construction, retail, office);
- 14 hours in the 2S stream (health and social care, with the assisted-mobility approach).
For you as an authorised organisation, this clock is first of all a commercial opportunity: every initial session mechanically creates a cohort to renew 24 months later. But it does not convert on its own — companies forget. Set up a systematic reminder: export closed sessions from FORPREV, contact clients 3 to 4 months before their employees’ deadlines, propose dates.
This upkeep rhythm is not administrative whimsy: a systematic review published in 2014 in the journal Ergonomics on the transfer of manual-handling training into practice highlights that turning what is learned into lasting behaviour at the workstation is the weak link of such training — without reactivation, practices erode. The refresher is the scheme’s answer to that documented problem.
Clock 2: trainer certificates — 36 months
The PRAP trainer certificate is valid for 36 months and is maintained through a trainer refresher — at least 21 hours for IBC, 28 hours for 2S — with certifying assessments.
It is the most critical clock: your authorisation rests on having at least one up-to-date certified trainer for the stream. An expired trainer certificate and your sessions stop — no improvised stand-in, since the initial pathway takes 70 to 98 hours, as our article on becoming a PRAP trainer explains.
Good practices:
- Book the trainer refresher as soon as the certificate is obtained, rather than waiting for year 3: refresher sessions are not available everywhere at all times.
- If you have only one trainer, you have no margin: a failed assessment, a departure or sick leave is enough to freeze the activity. As soon as volume justifies it, certify a second trainer or contract a fallback.
- Keep a certificate register (dates obtained, expiry, stream) — it also serves as useful evidence at your Qualiopi audit, on the upkeep of instructors’ competencies.
Clock 3: the authorisation itself — 5 years
The PRAP authorisation is granted for 5 years. At expiry, the entity must file a renewal request through FORPREV, for each domain and level concerned. The file goes back through the network’s examination procedure — it is not a tacit renewal.
Treat renewal as a mini-project, several months ahead:
- Check that your trainers are up to date with their refresher and will remain so during the examination.
- Re-read the specifications in force (the general and PRAP-specific cahiers des charges): the INRS reference documents evolve, and your file must reflect the current version.
- Check the cleanliness of your FORPREV history: sessions declared and closed, certificates issued. A rigorous history is your best argument.
- Submit the request in FORPREV and follow the examination.
Day-to-day use of the platform — accounts, sessions, certificates — is covered in our FORPREV walkthrough.
The deadline dashboard
| Item | Validity | Upkeep | Where it is managed |
|---|---|---|---|
| Acteur PRAP certificate | 24 months | 7-h (IBC) / 14-h (2S) refresher | Refresher sessions declared in FORPREV |
| PRAP trainer certificate | 36 months | 21-h (IBC) / 28-h (2S) refresher, certifying assessments | Trainer-training entity + FORPREV |
| Entity authorisation | 5 years | Renewal request per domain/level | FORPREV, file re-examined |
Add your own deadlines: the Qualiopi surveillance audit and renewal if your clients fund through an OPCO — the overall calendar is all the easier to manage because the PRAP scheme’s evidence feeds your 32 indicators.
The pitfalls that cost dearly
- Discovering the 5-year deadline at the last minute: the examination takes time; a gap in authorisation means a frozen catalogue and clients owed an impossible explanation.
- Letting your only trainer’s certificate expire: the classic breakdown of small structures.
- Not chasing worker cohorts at 24 months: you hand a competitor the recurring flow you created.
- Renewing “as is” without re-reading the reference documents: the scheme evolves (the integration of ALM in the 2S stream proved it); a dated file shows.

Frequently asked questions
+When should you request the renewal of the PRAP authorisation?
The authorisation is granted for 5 years. At expiry, the entity must file a renewal request through FORPREV, for each domain and level concerned. Anticipate: assemble the file several months before the deadline to avoid any interruption of your right to train.
+What happens if our PRAP trainer's certificate expires?
The trainer certificate is valid for 36 months and is maintained through a refresher (MAC — at least 21 hours for the IBC stream, 28 hours for 2S) that includes certifying assessments. Without an up-to-date trainer, your organisation can no longer run valid PRAP sessions: it is the central condition of the authorisation.
+Is the worker refresher (MAC) a commercial opportunity?
Yes, and a structural one: every employee certified as an acteur PRAP must take a refresher every 24 months (7 hours in IBC, 14 hours in 2S) to keep the certificate. Every initial session you sell therefore mechanically creates a recurring flow of upkeep sessions — provided you contact your clients before the deadline.
