Renewing the BAFA-BAFD authorisation: obligations and long-run stewardship

Obtaining the BAFA-BAFD authorisation is only the beginning: issued for one to three years by the minister responsible for youth, it is maintained by continuously meeting the criteria and renewed on file, in step with the national three-year calendar. Here are the obligations that run through the authorisation period, and the method for approaching renewal without stress.

What binds you during the authorisation period

Running compliant sessions

The authorisation covers specific sessions: general training (at least 8 days), specialisation (6 days) and qualification (8 days) for the BAFA; general training (9 days) and advanced training (6 days) for the BAFD. Every session must comply with the French regulations on children’s group activities — supervision, premises, safety — and with the educational project presented in your file. The gap between the project filed and the sessions actually delivered is the first thing a renewal file exposes.

Keeping the online services up to date

The platform bafa-bafd.jeunes.gouv.fr (redesigned in September 2024) is your mandatory interface with the administration: declaring sessions, recording trainee results and appraisals. This data feeds the tracking of journey deadlines — a 30-month cap for the BAFA (with at most 18 months between general training and the practical placement), 4 years for the BAFD — and the files put before the juries.

An organisation that records results late concretely blocks its trainees: a completed but unrecorded journey cannot go before a jury. It is also a lasting negative signal to the administration that will assess your renewal.

Keeping the trainer network alive

Your trainers committed individually for the duration of the authorisation, and your file included a three-year training plan for session directors and trainers. Both commitments must be executed: documented replacement of departing trainers (with their two significant experiences in children’s group activities), and actual delivery of the planned trainer-development actions.

Maintaining this pool is not merely administrative. Francis Lebon shows in “Les animateurs socioculturels” (La Découverte, 2009) that the sector rests on a fragile balance between permanent staff, seasonal workers and volunteers: BAFA-BAFD training teams face the same turnover, and only organisations that recruit and train continuously can honour three-year commitments.

Supporting BAFD journeys

Your sessions also serve the wider system: the authorisation to practise held by BAFD holders, valid 5 years, is renewed on evidence of 28 days in director or deputy functions, or 6 days as a trainer in a BAFA or BAFD session. Your training teams thus offer experienced directors a way to maintain their authorisation — a trainer-recruitment argument worth using.

Preparing renewal: the permanent-file method

Renewal is assessed like an initial application, against the criteria of article 5 of the amended order of 15 July 2015 — with one major difference: this time, the administration has your actual track record. Best practice is a permanent file, fed as you go:

The authorised organisation’s annual checklist

A half-day annual review is enough to secure the essentials. To go through each year, for instance at the close of your financial year:

• every session of the year is declared and its results recorded on the online services, with no trainee file pending;
• the list of active trainers is up to date, with evidence and individual commitments for newcomers;
• the year’s actions under the three-year training plan were delivered — or rescheduled with a written trace;
• the educational project and session blueprints are still aligned (regulatory durations, content, methods);
• complaints and session incidents are documented with their follow-up;
• the economic results of the sessions feed next year’s budget.

This ritual turns renewal into a formality: the file compiles itself instead of being reconstructed.

The renewal calendar

Authorisations fit into national three-year periods — 2026-2029 currently, whose campaign closed on 15 September 2025 for effect on 1 January 2026. Your renewal will align with the campaign covering the next period: watch jeunes.gouv.fr and your DRAJES from the penultimate year of your authorisation, build the file six months before the announced deadline, and never assume a date will slip.
