How to obtain the Qualibat qualification in 2026: file and steps

Getting qualified by Qualibat — the French construction qualification body — is not about filling in a form: it is about demonstrating, evidence in hand, that your company can do what it claims. The good news: the process is well marked out, the criteria are known, and a well-prepared file moves fast. Here is the complete journey from first contact to the committee’s decision.

Why qualify — and why now

The Qualibat qualification is voluntary, but two mechanisms make it strategic. First, project owners, architects and buyers use it as a tender filter: it provides third-party proof of your technical capability for a given type of works. Second, the RGE mark (« Reconnu Garant de l’Environnement », the French quality sign for energy-renovation work) that attaches to the relevant qualifications conditions your customers’ access to the main renovation subsidies — MaPrimeRénov’, the CEE energy-saving certificates, the eco-loan. Without it, your insulation or heating quote competes against subsidised quotes: the game is lost before pricing.

This is not a French quirk: research shows that home energy renovation relies massively on small firms whose ability to organise themselves determines the quality of the works. A study by Gavin Killip and Alice Owen published in 2020 in Energy Policy (“The construction industry as agents of energy demand configuration in the existing housing stock”) highlights that this market is dominated by SMEs and that their practices directly shape the energy performance of the building stock (see the study). Qualification schemes exist precisely to structure that fabric of companies.

The three blocks the committee examines

A Qualibat file rests on three criteria, and it fails as soon as one is weak:

Technical mastery. This is the core: project references matching precisely the works applied for — detailed quotes, photos, plans — and the qualifications of your staff (diplomas, experience). Every qualification requested must be backed by real references; asking for a code “just in case”, with no projects to show, manufactures a refusal.

Financial health. Qualibat checks the consistency between your human and material resources and your revenue, as well as the company’s sustainability. The goal: making sure you can actually carry the type of projects claimed.

Administrative compliance. Valid registration (SIRET, the French company ID), up-to-date insurance certificates — professional liability and the ten-year construction warranty (« décennale ») — and clean social-security and tax records.

Before even opening the file, inventory your references by type of works: that inventory determines which codes of the nomenclature to request — and which to postpone.

The eight steps of the process

1. Information request: you identify the target qualifications and receive the corresponding requirements.
2. Company workspace creation: Qualibat issues a purchase order, records the file-management payment and opens its platform to you.
3. File submission online with all supporting documents.
4. Examination by the committee, made up of industry professionals — your file is read by people who know the trade.
5. Decision: award, or improvement recommendations ahead of a new application. A refusal is not final: it tells you what is missing.
6. Site inspection, around six months after a positive decision, for RGE qualifications and certain specific qualifications.
7. Annual follow-up: a questionnaire and updated insurance certificates.
8. Review: the qualification is granted for four years at most; eight months before expiry, you assemble a new file.

Real timelines

The process itself is fast: a complete file can reach the committee the month after submission, and the decision arrives on average within about thirty days of full validation. What stretches timelines is not Qualibat, it is the file: missing documents, poorly documented references, an expired insurance certificate. Every completion round-trip costs you weeks.

Young companies: the probationary route

No references yet? The probationary qualification, valid for two years at most, is designed notably for new companies led by experienced professionals and for firms launching a new activity. It gets you into the scheme and gives you time to build, project after project, the references that will convert the trial into a full qualification. A habit to adopt from the very first job: one folder per project (quote, dated photos, invoice, acceptance report), filed by type of works.

The mistakes that cost months

• Submitting an incomplete file expecting to “complete it later”: the opposite happens — the file waits.
• Requesting too many qualifications at once, beyond what your references cover.
• Neglecting the financial block: a company whose resources do not match its declared revenue will be turned down, however technically solid.
• Forgetting that the cost of the qualification includes annual maintenance: budget the full cycle, not just the entry.
