RGE renewal: how long the technical referent's training stays valid

Obtaining an RGE qualification (Reconnu Garant de l’Environnement, the French quality mark for energy-renovation contractors) is a project; keeping it is a process. A four-year cycle, an annual review, a technical referent to keep on the payroll: most qualification losses come not from an initial refusal but from a missed deadline or a poorly anticipated departure. Here is how validity works on the training and referent side, and the calendar to keep.

The life cycle of an RGE qualification

RGE qualifications issued by the qualification bodies — Qualibat, Qualit’EnR, Qualifelec… — follow a common rhythm:

Milestone What happens What is checked on the skills side
Award Full application review Technical referent appointed, skills validated (approved course + QCM in most cases)
Annual review (each year of the cycle) Lighter document check A validated technical referent still on staff, award conditions maintained
Renewal (every 4 years) Full application again Same requirements as at award, up to date with the frameworks in force

The practical consequence: the question “is my referent still valid?” does not arise once every four years, but every year. And there is no automatic grace period: the continuity of the qualification depends on meeting the review deadlines.

The referent’s departure: the costliest blind spot

The technical referent is a natural person. If they resign, retire or change roles, their validated skills leave with them — and with them one of the pillars of your qualification.

The steps to take, without delay:

  1. Appoint a new referent among the directors or employees whose profile fits;
  2. Check their prior record: have they already validated an approved course in the qualification’s field? If so, gather the evidence (certificate, knowledge-test result);
  3. Otherwise, enrol them on an approved course — since 1 October 2025, the FEEBAT RENOPERF pathway for energy efficiency (cross-cutting module with QCM, then the module specific to your category of works), or the corresponding approved course for renewables;
  4. Evidence it all before your next annual review with your qualification body.

The limiting factor is often the calendar of approved sessions: do not wait for the review letter to look for a seat. A company whose qualification lapses makes its clients lose access to the subsidies (MaPrimeRénov’, CEE certificates, the zero-interest eco-loan) — and a job signed “RGE” without a valid qualification is a commercial and legal risk.

Why refresher training is not a formality

One could see these recurring validations as an administrative ritual. Learning research says the opposite: unused skills erode, and quickly. The meta-analysis by Winfred Arthur, Winston Bennett, Pamela Stanush and Theresa McNelly, published in 1998 in Human Performance (“Factors that influence skill decay and retention: a quantitative review and analysis”), aggregates 53 studies and shows substantial skill loss growing with the duration of non-use — particularly marked for cognitive and accuracy-based tasks, precisely the referent’s: sizing, technical choices, reading the interfaces between trades (see the study).

The moral: a referent trained several years ago, on a syllabus overhauled since, objectively needs a refresher — regardless of any obligation. Companies that treat the referent’s continuing training as an investment, not a constraint, are also those that best defend their site audits.

The 2025 reform: who has to redo what?

Since 1 October 2025, the training architecture has changed (orders of 17 March 2025): the single RENOVE module has given way to the RENOPERF pathway — a one-day cross-cutting module concluded by the RGE QCM, plus a specific module per category of works.

What to remember on the validity side:

  • ongoing qualifications are not retroactively called into question by the reform;
  • any new validation — new referent, extension to a new category of works, new qualification application — goes through the new architecture;
  • at the four-year renewal, your application is examined against the frameworks in force: anticipate the upgrade rather than discover it in the qualification body’s remarks.

In any ambiguous situation (referent trained under the old regime, change of category, multiple qualifications), one rule: your qualification body decides, not the sector’s hearsay.

For training providers: the renewal market

For approved training organisations, these cycles are a structural opportunity: every annual review, every referent departure and every four-year renewal creates recurring demand. Simply tracking your former trainees’ deadlines — and reaching out usefully at the right moment — turns one-off sessions into lasting relationships. Provided you are in order yourself: an up-to-date approval framework and Qualiopi certification so the courses remain fundable, as detailed on our page on RGE-approved training.

Take action

Do not let a review deadline or a referent’s departure weaken a qualification that conditions your clients’ access to subsidies. Our RGE-approved training page sums up the scheme, the up-to-date training pathways and the points of vigilance — with a free ebook to build your maintenance calendar.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

+How long is an RGE qualification valid?

The RGE qualification is granted for a four-year cycle, with an annual review during which the qualification body checks that the award conditions are still met — including the presence of a technical referent with validated skills. Renewal at the end of the cycle goes through a full application again.

+Does the technical referent's departure mean losing the RGE qualification?

Not automatically, but you must act fast: the company has to appoint a new referent and evidence their skills before its next annual review. If the replacement has not already completed approved training in the field, they must take it with an approved organisation — otherwise the qualification is at risk at the review.

+Do referents have to retrain after the October 2025 reform?

The reform replaced the FEEBAT RENOVE module with the RENOPERF pathway for new validations; it does not retroactively cancel training already counted in an ongoing qualification. However, any new referent — replacement, activity extension, new qualification — goes through the new architecture. If in doubt about your situation, your qualification body is the authority.
